Year 5 writing practice with rubric-based feedback.

WriteWiseCoach helps Year 5 students improve persuasive and narrative writing — with feedback scored against the NAPLAN marking criteria. Every mark is supported by evidence from the student’s own writing, so they know exactly what to improve next.

Why Year 5 matters

Year 5 is the first writing NAPLAN that counts for high school.

From 2025, NAPLAN results are used in school reports and can influence selective school and scholarship applications. Year 5 is also a natural preparation point for the high school selective entry tests most students sit in Year 6. Starting focused writing practice in Year 5 gives students a full year to build skills before those decisions are made.

What we focus on

The writing skills that move Year 5 scores up.

Audience awareness

Year 5 students are expected to tailor their writing to the reader and purpose — a criterion that is often underdeveloped without explicit feedback.

Text structure

Persuasive texts need an introduction, structured arguments, and a conclusion. Narratives need orientation, complication, and resolution.

Vocabulary choice

Moving beyond common words to precise, deliberate vocabulary is one of the highest-impact improvements at Year 5 level.

Sentence variety

Mixing short and long sentences, and controlling sentence beginnings, lifts writing from competent to engaging.

Cohesion and flow

Year 5 writing is often structured but choppy. Feedback targets linking words, pronoun consistency, and paragraph flow.

Punctuation and spelling

Accurate punctuation and spelling frees the reader to focus on the ideas — markers deduct for errors at this level.

How it works

Practice, feedback, revise — without the guesswork.

  1. 1
    Pick a writing prompt

Choose a NAPLAN-style persuasive or narrative prompt suited to Year 5.

  2. 2
    Write the response

The student writes their own essay — the AI never writes for them or suggests wording.

  3. 3
    Get rubric feedback

Scores across all NAPLAN criteria, with evidence quotes from the student's own text.

  4. 4
    Revise with coaching prompts

Specific prompts guide the next draft. Progress is tracked across submissions.

Questions about Year 5 writing practice

My child is in Year 5 — when is the NAPLAN writing test?

NAPLAN is sat in Term 1 of Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. For Year 5, the test typically takes place in March. Regular practice in Term 4 of Year 4 and early Term 1 of Year 5 makes the biggest difference.

What types of writing does Year 5 NAPLAN test?

Year 5 NAPLAN writing is either persuasive or narrative — the genre alternates each year. Practising both ensures students are prepared regardless of which genre appears.

How is WriteWiseCoach different from writing practice books?

Practice books tell students what good writing looks like, but they don't score your child's actual writing or explain what to fix. WriteWiseCoach gives rubric-based feedback on your child's own work — with evidence quoted from their text and specific prompts for the next revision.

Can parents see the feedback?

Yes. Parents with linked accounts can review every report — including rubric scores, evidence quotes, and coaching prompts — at any time.
